My Best Work in Grade 11

Throughout this course, I have gained immense knowledge and skills in writing, analyzing, and discussing English texts this term. I’ve learned to reflect on my work with the target tracker, incorporate the good things about my literacy skills, and discard the things that hindered my literacy skills.

Adapting Famous Writers Assignment

This was my first of 2 assignments on the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the second being my ISP Presentation which I will be discussing later. This assignment was before I had read through the whole book and had minimal understanding of the book at this time but I did well for the circumstances of the situation. I had read through a few pages and had successfully encapsulated the writing style of William Golding as best as a Grade 11 student can. The only thing I would say is I could've written more so Mr. Cohen would have more material to work with when marking it.

Review Writing

After having analyzed and written a few practice reviews, for my assessment on review writing I decided to write about the show Better Call Saul. I was familiar with the show and we got to pick what we wrote our review about so I chose a show that I really enjoyed and even analyzed on my own time and spoke with my friends about it so I already had an idea of what I would talk about in the review.

Discussion 4

Reading The Hate U Give was an extremely eye-opening look at racism and police brutality. I had always enjoyed the book since the start of the term, however, I was always unable to convey as such in our discussions. Discussion 4 was different, as I used the resiliency skills we learned in assembly and applied them by not being unmotivated or sad about my previous discussion performances, but by changing and preparing for this discussion, and participating more in this one, which payed off.

Poster Presentation

In our Romeo and Juliet posters, we were supposed to add quotations comparing loyalty and love and comparing/showing instances of loyalty and love in the Montague and Capulet families, we were also supposed to present our thesis statements for our essays. Mine was quite extensive, including many quotations of loyalty and love conflicting, which related to my thesis which was: "The themes of loyalty and love relate significantly in Romeo and Juliet, with Shakespeare portraying loyalty as a devotion that fuels love, and love as a force that often conflicts with, and transcends loyalty in many cases."

ISP Presentation

For my ISP Presentation, I chose the book Lord of the Flies. I was already somewhat familiar with it due to a previous assignment (which I spoke about), so it seemed a more attractive choice to me than the other books. In this presentation, I analyzed 2 characters: Ralph and Jack. My thesis for Ralph was: "In Lord of the Flies, Ralph represents democratic principles, ethics, and the struggle to preserve one's character in the midst of monstrosity and savagery." My thesis for Jack was: "In Lord of the Flies, Jack's persona represents limitless authority, the slide into wickedness, and the seductive darkness of our primal urges. Showing how one may go from being a civilized, rule-abiding person, to becoming a vicious and oppressive leader when left unchecked."
